Layla Kapok Pillow

Features
  • Filling: Kapok fibers and reactive memory foam
  • Cover: polyester/viscose blend with CuTec performance copper fibers
  • Firmness: adjustable
  • Sizes: Queen, King
  • Warranty: 5-year limited

More features: adjustable loft; cooling and antiallergenic; 120-night trial

The Kapok is a pillow that consists of fibers and reactive memory foam. It’s made by Layla, a bed in the box company that launched back in 2015. The cover is a quilted blend of polyester and viscose that’s designed to be stretchy but durable. It’s also nice and smooth and has a good-looking hexagon pattern incorporated.

If you’re someone who’s constantly flipping the pillow over to get the cool side, you will like how this pillow works to control temperature. The copper in both the cover and shredded foam helps keep heat away from your head and neck. It’s great for people who sleep hot; the memory foam has a reputation for trapping heat. Its shredded structure lets air flow and the copper helps keep things cool. Lastly, people who want adjustability can get practically any height on this pillow.

Why did it make our list?
  • Overall, we think this pillow blend is soft and supportive. It's versatile enough to pair with a variety of mattresses and the adjustability of it is cool. It works for all types of mattresses and it's like you've built your pillow. Some combinations of fabrics and materials can make a lot of noise when you move around on them. But the softness of the materials both inside and outside in this pillow help keep the noise down.
What is not ideal about it?
  • There's the complaint of off-gassing smell. This is common in products compressed in boxes and shipped straight from the manufacturing facility. However, this smell should subside in hours.

  • Firmness: soft and firm

More features: low- and mid-loft versions; cooling channels; tapered edges

The Amerisleep Dual Comfort classic pillow is made of Bio-Pur memory foam. It has a very soft knit cover that adds a little bit of stretch to the pillow. You can unzip the cover and access the inner core. The inner core is a solid piece of their proprietary Bio-Pur foams. This is the same thing you’re going to find in their mattresses. It has a lot of memory foam feel.

It’s ideal for side and back sleepers who have back, neck, or head issues where you just need to release some of the pressure. The pillow comes in two different sizes – Queen and King. The Queen is 27 inches long and 16 inches wide. It has a six-inch loft with a softer feel. Then there are ventilated holes within the pillow. When you squeeze the pillow, you can feel that air come out. It’s an open-cell foam.

    What makes it stand out?
  • These Bio-Pur foam pillows are known for being breathable. It's also partially plant-based and its production involves fewer emissions and is more eco-friendly. Also, you have a 100-night sleep trial for the pillow. We would recommend keeping it for at least 30 days and trying it for three nights to see if it's a good fit for you.
Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?
  • We found no significant downside in this pillow. There's a lot to like about this pillow especially if you're looking for memory foam but you're worried about sleeping hot. It is a solid piece of memory foam with contouring and pressure relieving properties.

Best Gel Memory Foam Pillow

WinkBeds Adjust-a-Cube Pillow

Features
  • Filling: gel memory foam
  • Cover: 88% polyester, 12% spandex
  • Firmness: adjustable
  • Sizes: Standard, King
  • Warranty: 5-year limited

More features: adjustable loft; removable foam cubes

The WinkBeds Adjust-a-Cube Pillow is a pillow with a core made of gel memory foam. The cover is made of two materials. 88 percent of it is in polyester while 12 percent is spandex, for extra stretchiness.  The firmness is adjustable and the pillow is obtainable in two sizes; that is, King and Queen, just like the Amerisleep Dual Comfort. The pillow has removable foam cubes. The cube foams are viscoelastic; they adjust to the meeting and other details of different shades the contours of your neck and head.

The pillow is for those who want lush comfort. It’s designed for all types of individual sleepers but for those who want a personalized sleep experience with comfort in mind. The gel memory foam cubes are designed to help you sleep cool, avoiding the build-up of heat which most traditional viscose foams are known for. It simply prevents users from overheating.

    What stands out?
  • We think the Cool-Knit cover is ergonomic to sleepers. The trademarked innovation makes the pillow to be extra breathable. It ensures optimized ventilation, letting air pass through, circulate, and exit. We also like the spandex composed cover. It gives the pillows some stretchiness. The pillow is easy to remove and easy to wash. Finally, the memory foam cube inner core lets the pillow adjust to your head and neck contours.
What cons did we manage to find?
  • This product has an off-gassing smell, especially during the first few hours of unpacking it. This is not a product downside; it is a material-specific problem, and the odor should go down in time.

  • Filling: foam
  • Cover: Tencel blended fabric
  • Firmness: medium
  • Sizes: 27 x 17 inches
  • Warranty: 2-year limited

More features: contoured design

This pillow is made by Nest Bedding. They are a company that also makes mattresses. It comes in three different sizes — standard, queen, and king. The standard size is about 24 inches by 17 and roughly 8 inches in height. The outer fabric is a Tencel blend. In case you’re not familiar with Tencel, it’s a sustainable fiber.

We will say that it is designed for all sleep positions. It’s also adjustable. What that means is that there is a zipper on one end. You can open it up and add or remove as much of the filling as you want, which makes this pillow a nice option for all sleep positions. The pieces are clumped together because they are being held together by polyester fibers. The pillow comes with a 100-night trial and is all made in the USA.

    What makes it stand out?
  • There are quite a lot of pros to this pillow. First of all, it's so versatile. Again, you can add and remove as much filling as you want. You can customize it for your sleep position. We will also say that the Tencel cover -- fabric cover -- is nicely designed and soft, but is also really breathable. If you're a hot sleeper, it's going to keep you cool at night. We also love that it comes in all different sizes and has a 100-night trial.
Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?
  • One thing that we want to point out about the Easy Breather that you should think about before purchasing, is that when you open the packaging, you will have some off-gassing smell. Just be aware that it may have some sort of a chemical-like smell when you first get it.

Best Hypoallergenic Pillow

Amore Beds Bamboo Charcoal Luxury Pillow

Features
  • Filling: bamboo charcoal infused foam
  • Cover: bamboo velour rayon
  • Firmness: medium
  • Sizes: Queen, King
  • Warranty: 5-year limited

More features: Zoned Technology; optional shoulder-cut design

The pillow from Amore Beds is made with foam infused with bamboo and charcoal. The cover too is made of bamboo velour rayon. The most unique feature about this pillow is its zoned technology and optional shoulder cut design. This pillow has medium firmness and is available in Queen and King sizes. The bamboo charcoal material is derived from bamboo that is burned at a very high temperature. Then, it’s ground into powder and infused in memory foam.

As it is made from bamboo charcoal, this pillow comes with great benefits. It is recommended for people who have allergies. The pillow can absorb excessive moisture, temperature, and odor. The Zoned technology gives the pillow the advantages of the pressure point relief you get from memory foam.

What do we love it for?
  • What we like most about this pillow is its organic materials. Bamboo and charcoal are great for eliminating odor. They also help with absorbing moisture and odor. Unlike pillows and mattresses made from memory foam, there's a lesser off-gassing smell and this helps you sleep cooler.
    What were we disappointed with?
  • Although the mattress comes with a 5-year warranty, there's no sleep night trial. Many brands offer between 30 to 120-night trials but Amore Beds offers none of it.

Best Hybrid Pillow

Bear Pillow

Features
  • Filling: hybrid foam
  • Cover: Double Ice fabric
  • Firmness: medium
  • Sizes: Standard, King
  • Warranty: 2-year limited

More features: dual mesh corned accents; 100-night trial; hypoallergenic and anti-microbial

Starting with the cover, it is soft and cool to the touch. The material is like a cooling yarn. They call this their Double Ice Fabric and we think that’s an apt name for it. The foam inside is a Loft X hybrid foam. It reminds us a lot of a blend between memory foam and latex foam. The pillow doesn’t feel like latex or memory foam but is somewhat of a hybrid between the two. However, it is aerated so it can increase the airflow.

If you have a king-sized mattress, you have to look into the king-size pillows, unless you want to get maybe three instead of two. The same thing applies to those who have Queen mattresses. This pillow comes in both those sizes, and with medium firmness, it should be perfect for side as well as back sleepers. And wit the unique materials, you won’t experience the traditional foam sleep-hot effect.

    What makes it special?
  • One of the things we like is this is machine washable. It's super soft and cool to touch. It will also stay cool throughout the entire night. The pillow is recommended for sleepers who sweat a lot. The cover consists of cooling yarn with a little bit of polyester. It is removable and vented on the side so it doesn't heat up at night.
    What cons did we find?
  • What we have to note about this pillow is they are very expensive pillows. But still, there's a lot to like about the pillow as mentioned above.

This is a luxury pillow made by a top-tier bedding manufacturer making a wide range of sleep products. Whether you want a mattress or a set of cooling pillows, they know that not all sleepers are the same and try to make something for everybody. They sell pillows in king and queen sizes. The insert in this pillow is an open-celled quick responding memory foam and not only is it gel-infused to help keep it cool but it also has little pinholes in it to help air move through it.

The soft smooth cover is made with copper-infused technology but similar to what Brooklyn bedding uses in their Brooklyn Aurora mattress. It’s a tough material but it feels a little slippery.

    What makes it stand out?
  • These materials feature on one side of the pillow the cover zips. It zips off easily and you can toss it in the washer. Another thing is these foams are CERTIPUR-US certified. This means that they've been tested by third parties to check for unsafe amounts of chemicals.
Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?
  • The pillow slides around but with a pillowcase, it should be fine. Brooklyn Bedding calls this a low loft pillow but we classify it as more of a medium because it's about four and a half inches tall. It's something to keep in mind if you like a low loft pillow.

The Naturepedic pillow is an organic model that is adjustable. It’s composed of several materials which make it multifunctional. The filling comprises of shredded latex foam and PLA fiber. The cover is made of quilted sateen with organic cotton fabric that is knit to be stretchy. Adjustable, it is obtainable in three sizes; the standard, King, and Queen sizes.

The versatility of this design means it usually works well for multiple sleep positions. So It’s ideal for all types of sleepers. It’s made of a springy material and it bounces right back. Clinical research suggests that the loft of your pillow keeps your head somewhere around four inches off the mattress to relieve pressure in your spine and neck muscles.

    Why are we impressed?
  • One advantage of having loose materials like this rather than a block of foam is that you can adjust the loft easily. The company gives you 30 nights to try out this pillow on your mattress. If it doesn't work out, you can donate it to charity and get your money back. Also, you have three size options to choose from.
What negatives must you be aware of?
  • What we didn't like is its limited one-year warranty. We feel for this price range, this should be more. Also, it comes with just 30 nights of sleep trial. We're aware many manufacturers don't offer this guarantee, but there are many other manufacturers which offer 100 to 120-night trials.

Best for Combination Sleepers

LAYR Customizable Pillow

Features
  • Filling: down alternative (polyester); gel-infused shredded memory foam
  • Cover: bamboo viscose; cotton
  • Firmness: adjustable
  • Sizes: Standard/Queen, King
  • Warranty: not specified

More features: adjustable loft

This is a memory foam pillow that comes in a black box. It weighs in its current configuration a little less than four pounds. It fits a standard pillowcase. It’s obtainable in Queen and King size versions. The pillow is a mixture of down alternative and shredded gel-infused memory foam. It has the CERTIPUR US certified stamp of approval.

The pillow is ideal for those who are looking for breathability in a luxury pillow. The cover is made of a bamboo blend and bamboo is great because it is a cooling material. The insert covers also consist of 100 percent cotton. Also, there’s a mesh outside layer that helps with breathability and cooling. You should also note that pillows made of – or composed of – gel-infused memory foam, tends to be good for cooling.

    What are our favorite features?
  • We liked that you can machine wash it in gentle cycle wash and then tumble dry in low heat. We have to mention that all of the memory foam included in this is CertiPur-US certified, which means toxic chemicals weren't used in the processing or in the making of the foam. Finally, this is a gel-infused memory foam, and it feels nice and soft.
    What could be better?
  • Transferring the soft fill into the other insert cover can be a disaster. You will end up getting pieces of fill all over your house. So, we recommend avoiding it at all costs. Also, avoid washing the covers of the ones that have the fill in them. However, removing to wash the solid memory foam is not a problem.

The Molecule Infinity Pro is a pillow made of CertiPUR-US certified shredded foam. The cover is made of two types of materials: polyester and polyethylene. It is adjustable and you have two size options to pick from standard and king. The foam is designed with open cells.

According to the manufacturer, this pillow is designed for all types of sleepers. The pillow is guaranteed not to lose shape, regardless of how hard it’s twisted, folded, or squeezed.

What do we love it for?
  • In the absence of a manufacturer warranty, we think the 30-night trial period will suffice in helping you find out if the pillow is to your taste. The pillow is CertiPUR-US certified; that is, it consists of no ozone depletes, PBDEs, TDCPP, TCEP flame retardants, lead, mercury, or heavy metals.
    What were we disappointed with?
  • It comes vacuum-sealed in a box for easier deliverability. However, the downside is when you unbox by busting open the seal, there's an initial off-gassing odor that is let off. You can therefore decide to unbox this early in the morning so it has time to air out before you go to bed. Unfortunately, there's no Queen size neither is there any mention of a warranty.

Best Lofty Feel

Nectar Lush Pillow

Features
  • Filling: molded memory foam
  • Cover: 70% polyester and 30% rayon
  • Firmness: medium
  • Sizes: Standard, King
  • Warranty: N/A

More features: advanced cooling technology; machine washable; 50-night trial

The cover has a quilted cover fabric made from a blend of polyester and Tencel. Polyester is soft to the touch, but also naturally moisture-wicking. Tencel is the name brand for lyocell, which is a sustainable material made from dissolving wood pulp. Tencel is known for its super smooth feel and also its ability to sleep cool and wick moisture. Between the polyester and the Tencel, you have a very moisture-wicking cover fabric. What’s interesting about this cover fabric, aside from its quilted design, is that it’s filled with a thin layer of foam.

One difference between pillows made from a solid piece of memory foam and shredded memory foam, as we see here, is that with one solid piece, you often get a little bit slower response to pressure. It has a little bit more of a tightened, moldable conformance to pressure. It’s a little bit bouncier than what you might necessarily associate with memory foam.

    Why is it special?
  • The first thing we must say we like is the cover fabric. It's quilted and super soft. It has a balance between being plush and supportive. The shredded foam design will give you that nice contoured support, but it is going to offer a little bit of a quicker response to pressure.
    What are the flaws?
  • What we didn't like is this isn't made for stomach sleepers. When it comes to stomach sleeping, we find it to be too firm and too lofty. Technically, yes, you could remove a considerable amount of fill to reduce that loft and make it suitable for stomach sleepers. You can remove some internal fill to get it to a low enough profile. But for back and side sleepers, two thumbs up to Nectar!

Things to Consider

You should know that a poor-quality pillow could cause you back / neck pain problems. Before choosing your luxury pillows, discover the characteristics to consider so that your pillow corresponds to the type of sleeper you are: its size, its shape, its filling, and its firmness. So, in this section, we will provide all information you need to know about luxury pillows and how to make the best choice.

What Makes a Pillow Luxurious?

A lot of things can make your pillow luxurious. First is their covers are always made of organic materials such as bamboo, charcoal bamboo, cotton, and more. These materials are ideal for environmentally conscious consumers and users. They also help wick moisture, odor, away, ensuring you sleep cool.

The filling is also made of high-quality foam constructions like memory foam, shredded foam, latex foam, gel memory foam, and down, for the most luxurious feel on your head. Most luxury pillows are designed for all types of sleepers too, but for the exception of Nectar Lush Pillow which is not suitable for stomach sleepers. However, ordinarily, you can make this adaptable by reducing the filling.

Features to consider before you buy a pillow

To ensure peaceful and restful nights, your pillow must be suitable for your needs. But what are the criteria to take into account when buying your pillow?

Filling and Cover Materials

12 Best Luxury Pillows for the Most Exquisite Bedroom Look and Feel

More than 90% of sleeping comfort comes from the material in which your pillow is made. The cover (also called ticking) also has a key role in terms of breathability for example. But everything about comfort and pressure point support comes from inside the pillow. At some point, one pillow is no better than another. It’s just that it will provide different comfort and support.

The filing is an essential criterion. In terms of composition, the pillow can be made of feathers, microfiber, shape memory, or even wool and foam. Note that there are synthetic pillows but they last less well over time (need to be changed every 6 to 12 months). Each layer of material has its advantage:

  • Down or feather pillows

They are modular in terms of flexibility and firmness and provide very pleasant sleeping comfort. They however tend to heat up and keep the heat in the summer which will not be suitable for people with allergies. The LAYR Customizable Pillow is a typical example of a down pillow.

  • Memory foam pillows

Memory foam pillows adjust perfectly to the contours and shapes of the head, whatever it is. Soft, they are not favored by people who prefer sustained robustness. They also come with an off-gassing smell.

  • Latex pillows

The elasticity of latex pillows will allow good support to the neck. Often sold at high prices, they have an off-gassing odor when opening the package which can be a turnoff. A typical example is the Naturepedic Organic 2-in-1 Adjustable Latex Pillow.

  • Polyester fiber pillows

Soft to the touch, they are well ventilated and very useful against allergies. Their lifespan is very short, unlike other materials.

Shapes and Sizes Available

12 Best Luxury Pillows for the Most Exquisite Bedroom Look and Feel

Choosing a pillow is just as difficult as choosing a bed because there is so much to choose from. It should be noted, however, that in terms of shape, the large majority of the pillows are either square or rectangular.

The two main shapes of pillows are the rectangle and the square. For each of them, several sizes are available, but the most common are 40×60 cm and 50×70 cm for rectangles, 60×60 cm, and 65×65 cm for squares.

In addition to these traditional models, there are also pillows to address specific issues. There are ergonomic ones with a slightly concave central part and rounded ends. There are anti-snoring models which help sleepers to stay on their side. We also have anti-snoring pillows and travel pillows.

However, some pillows may be presented in slightly less classic formats. This is what we see in the case of some memory foam pillows, for example with sizes of 50 × 75 cm.

Firmness

The ideal degree of firmness for a pillow depends on your preferences, but also on the position in which you sleep. If you lie on your stomach, you can opt for a rather flat and fluffy model. When you spend your nights on your back, a medium-firm pillow will comfortably support your head and neck.

Finally, if you are resting in a lateral position, it is recommended that you use a firm pillow that helps preserve the natural alignment of the cervical vertebrae while filling the gap between the mattress and the head.

Adjustability

Adjustability is a key criterion for luxury pillows. What adjustability means is that there is a zipper on one end. You can open it up and add or remove as much of the filling as you want. This makes the pillow a nice option for all sleep positions. Most luxury pillows we recommended in the review section are adjustable. Typical examples are the WinkBeds Adjust-a-Cube Pillow, Molecule Infinity PRO Adjustable Foam Pillow, and the Naturepedic Organic 2-in-1 Adjustable Latex Pillow.

Cooling Properties

The cooling properties in a pillow ensure you can sleep with little worries over heat or moisture. Bamboo, cotton, and latex pillows all have cooling properties and are most recommended for hot sleepers.

Sleep Trial and Warranty

Over the long term, a pillow can tend to flatten out and become less comfortable. Usually, this is slightly felt after a few months of use, but some people are much more sensitive.

To get an idea of how long the pillow will last, there isn’t much else than reading customer reviews. However, in terms of guarantees, many manufacturers offer a 90-day return policy or a 30 to 120-night sleep trial. Many manufacturers also offer in addition, or exclusion of the night trials, a warranty service that ranges from 1 to 10 years.

Amerisleep Dual Comfort Pillow trumps other models in this aspect as it comes with 10 years warranty and a 100-night sleep trial.

Extra Features

12 Best Luxury Pillows for the Most Exquisite Bedroom Look and Feel

Some of the extra features which may come with the pillow include:

  • Antibacterial properties: Serious tests must have been carried out on pillows intended for people allergic to dust or dust mites.
  • Removable covers: Pillows with removable covers ensure you can wash the cover in the washing machine. This also lets you adjust the fill to your position.

Consider Your Sleeping Position

Depending on each individual’s usual position on the bed, the choice of pillow will not be the same. If you sleep on your back, you shouldn’t choose a pillow that positions your head too far back. A pillow that is too soft will not be ideal in this case and may even increase snoring. But a pillow that is too firm is not recommended either because it may cause a migraine at sunrise.

If, on the other hand, you sleep mainly on your side, a memory foam pillow is the most recommended model because it perfectly supports the neck by prolonging the alignment of the back and thus relieving the neck.

If you are used to sleeping on your stomach, a soft, low-density pillow is best. When you sleep on your stomach, you lie flat with your head turned to the side. Soft, low-density pillows provide support and relief to the neck while keeping the body aligned.
