Brooklyn Signature Hybrid

Features
  • Type: hybrid
  • Thickness: 11.5 inches
  • Firmness: soft / medium / firm
  • Number of layers: 5
  • Cover: quilted polyfoam cotton
  • Warranty: 10-year limited

More features: 961 individually encased coils; patented TitanFlex foam; 120-night trial

The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid is Brooklyn Bedding’s most popular mattress. It’s highly affordable, highly responsive, and highly comfortable. Plus, this mattress is available in three different firmness levels to match your preference: soft, medium, and firm.

Regardless of which firmness level you choose, the Signature Hybrid is constructed with two distinct layers of foam. The first layer is Brooklyn Bedding’s proprietary TitanFlex foam, which is significantly more responsive than traditional memory foams. It’s also infused with TitaniumGel, which helps move heat away from your body and makes the foam resistant to microorganisms.

The second foam layer is made from Energex foam, which is a denser and highly responsive foam material. This provides the bed with much more bounce than you might expect from even a hybrid mattress, while also helping to eliminate pressure points for heavier sleepers.

The innerspring core is made from Ascension coils, which can handle the weight of heavier sleepers without feeling overly soft. The coils are individually encased to help reduce motion transfer and the edges are reinforced so that you can sit on the sides of the bed without problems.

The Signature Hybrid is topped with a quilted cover, which improves breathability without adding too much plushness to the top of the bed.

Brooklyn Bedding provides a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty on this mattress. We’d like to see a slightly longer warranty for a hybrid bed, but users have few complaints after years of use.

    What are our favorite features?
  • Available in three firmness levels
  • Extremely responsive foam blends
  • Reduces motion transfer across bed
  • Good edge support
  • Good value for money
    What could be better?
  • Somewhat short 10-year warranty
  • Soft version isn’t particularly plush

Best Memory Foam Mattress

Layla Sleep Memory Foam Mattress

Features
  • Type: memory foam
  • Thickness: 10 inches
  • Firmness: medium soft on one side; firm on the other
  • Number of layers: 4
  • Cover: thermo-gel infused
  • Warranty: lifetime limited; 120-night trial

More features: flippable; works with any foundation

The Layla mattress is an all-foam, thick mattress. It actually combines two different firmness levels since you can flip it over if you need to. On one side, it is medium soft, and on the other one, it is nice and firm. This helps to make this a good mattress for lots of different sleeping positions.

A big problem with a lot of memory foam mattresses is that they are much too hot to get a comfortable night’s rest. The Layla, however, is quite different and is surprisingly one of the coolest sleeping mattresses on the market. As with most mattresses, this model has plenty of airflow space built-in, which helps to keep you nice and cool during the night.

What sets it apart from other memory foam mattresses, however, is the copper infusion throughout the memory foam. This innovative system draws hot air away from your body, all while pushing coolness your way, which keeps you nice and comfortable while you are sleeping.

Layla is so sure that you are going to love this mattress, that they actually offer a lifetime guarantee, which should help to set your mind at ease should you choose to purchase this mattress. It also comes with a nice long trial period that will allow you to try it out and see if you like it before you commit to it fully. This trial period is especially nice for heavier individuals since this mattress might be too thin to provide the support that they require.

    Why are we impressed?
  • Sleeps very cool thanks to copper infusion
  • Breathable cover
  • Can be flipped over
  • Works well with any base
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Long trial period
What negatives must you be aware of?
  • Might be too thin for heavier individuals

Best Latex Mattress

Sleep EZ Roma Latex Mattress

Features
  • Type: latex
  • Thickness: 9 inches
  • Firmness: medium-plush or firm
  • Number of layers: 3
  • Cover: quilted organic cotton
  • Warranty: 10-year limited

More features: natural aerated Dunlop latex; flappable firmness; 90-day sleep trial

The Roma Latex mattress from Sleep EZ is an inexpensive and highly customizable latex bed. The mattress is made from two thick layers of natural Dunlop latex. The layers are aerated at two different densities, so you can sleep on one side and get a firm mattress or flip it over to adjust the feeling to medium-plush. That’s not just good for finding your perfect night’s sleep now – if you keep this bed for 10 or 20 years, you might find that the softer side alleviates joint pain as you age.

The bed is finished with a quilted organic cotton cover on both the top and bottom. Unfortunately, this isn’t removable so you will likely want to invest in a mattress protector for this bed.

Sleep EZ provides a 20-year warranty on this mattress. However, note that beyond 10 years of use, you are issued a warranty refund on a sliding scale instead of receiving your entire purchase price back. We liked that Sleep EZ includes two free pillows for this mattress, and you can add a wooden foundation to your bed while still keeping the total cost under $1,000. Of course, the company also offers a sleep trial of up to 90 nights so that you can make sure this mattress suits your sleeping style.

    What are its best features?
  • Flippable to customize firmness
  • Natural, aerated Dunlop latex construction
  • Comes with two free pillows
  • Can add a mattress foundation for extra cost
    What could be improved?
  • Cotton cover is not removable

Best for Cooling

Idle Gel Foam Mattress

Features
  • Type: all-foam
  • Thickness: 12 inches
  • Firmness: medium-firm
  • Number of layers: 5
  • Cover: quilted polyester
  • Warranty: lifetime limited

More features: gel-infused memory foam for cooling; 450 GSM top layer; 18-month (548-night) sleep trial

The Idle mattress is a thick and luxurious all-foam mattress for a price that won’t break the bank. The secret to this bed is that Idle designed the foam layers with real sleepers in mind, rather than just using the same materials as every other memory foam mattress.

The comfort layer is memory foam, but it’s nothing like the typical memory foam. Idle’s cooling buoyancy foam is infused with gel to help dissipate heat throughout the night. It is also much more responsive than standard memory foam and doesn’t allow you to sink into the bed.

Idle’s transition foam layer adds to the mattress’s responsive feel. The company also perforates the foam with tons of tiny holes, which goes a long way towards making the bed more breathable.

The company also re-imagined what the foam support core could be. It is seven inches thick, compared to six inches or less for most comparable mattresses. In addition, it’s made with 2.4-pound foam rather than the standard 1.8-pound foam. That makes it more durable and much more comfortable for heavyset sleepers. But thanks to the thick memory foam comfort layer, you still don’t have to worry about pressure points.

Idle feels so confident in this bed that the company offers an industry-leading 18-month sleep trial. Plus, it comes with two free memory foam pillows and a lifetime warranty.

    Why is it special?
  • Cooling buoyancy foam provides support and heat dissipation
  • Perforated transition layer for breathability
  • Extra durable base foam layer
  • 18-month sleep trial
  • Lifetime warranty
    What are the flaws?
  • Cover is not removable for cleaning

Best for Side Sleepers

Nolah Original Mattress

Features
  • Type: all-foam
  • Thickness: 10 inches
  • Firmness: medium
  • Number of layers: 3
  • Cover: polyester and viscose blend
  • Warranty: 15-year limited

More features: AirFoam for pressure relief and cooling; 120-night trial

The Nolah mattress is a simple mattress built with proprietary layers of foam to provide excellent comfort and support. The key to this bed is the two-inch-thick layer of air foam at the top, which is designed to contour around your body without allowing you to sink into the bed like traditional memory foam. The foam uses an open-cell construction, so it’s much more breathable than traditional memory foam as well.

The transitional foam layer in this bed is only one inch thick, which can be problematic for heavyset sleepers. That said, it is highly responsive and supportive. Side sleepers also noted that it does a nice job of eliminating pressure points.

The Nolah bed is rated as medium firmness, although most users felt that it was on the soft side of medium. This mattress is best for light to average weight side and back sleepers. Heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers are very likely to find that it is too soft.

Nolah offers a 120-night sleep trial for this bed, but what’s interesting about this is that you can save money by declining the trial. If you skip the trial and commit to this bed when you purchase it, you can slash close to 15% off the purchase price. The mattress comes with a 15-year warranty, so you’re still covered in case of sags or other defects.

    What makes it special?
  • Proprietary air foam is breathable and supportive
  • Eliminates pressure points for side sleepers
  • Can skip sleep trial to save money
  • 15-year warranty
    What cons did we find?
  • Proprietary air foam is breathable and supportive
  • Eliminates pressure points for side sleepers
  • Can skip sleep trial to save money
  • 15-year warranty

Best for Back Sleepers

Nectar Mattress

Features
  • Type: all-foam
  • Thickness: 11 inches
  • Firmness: medium-firm
  • Number of layers: 5
  • Cover: Tencel-poly blend
  • Warranty: lifetime limited

More features: cooling properties due to gel-infused memory foam and Tencel cover; 365-night trial

The Nectar mattress is an all-foam mattress designed first and foremost for back sleepers. It uses a thick layer of memory foam and a secondary layer of responsive transition foam to fill the pockets that form under your spine as you sleep and to keep your body in alignment. While some side and stomach sleepers liked the Nectar mattress, many found that it was either too firm or too soft for their liking.

As with many foam mattresses, the biggest issue that the Nectar bed faces is cooling. Nectar tackled this head-on by infusing the memory foam layer with gel, designing the lower layers to be breathable, and adding a cooling Tencel cover. The result is a relatively cool foam mattress, although a number of users noted that it can still feel hot on warm summer nights.

One thing to keep in mind about the Nectar mattress is that the emphasis is on keeping costs down rather than ensuring that all the materials are eco-friendly. Unlike a lot of other mattress companies, Nectar cannot say that its bed is made entirely in the USA. It also makes no claims about using green foam or foams that are Greenguard Gold certified.

Still, for the price, it’s hard to beat the Nectar mattress. You get a 365-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty if you decide to keep the bed. Plus, it comes with sheets, a mattress protector, and two free pillows to give you an entirely new sleeping experience. Nectar also offers white glove delivery for an extra fee.

    Why are we impressed?
  • Highly responsive foam for spinal alignment
  • Breathable, cooling design
  • Comes with lots of free extras
  • Includes Tencel cover
  • Lifetime warranty
What negatives must you be aware of?
  • Not fully made in the USA
  • Not ideal for many stomach and side sleepers

Best for Combination Sleepers

The Original Bear

Features
  • Type: all-foam
  • Thickness: 10 inches
  • Firmness: medium firm
  • Number of layers: 3
  • Cover: Celliant textile
  • Warranty: 10-year limited

More features: cooling graphite-gel foam and breathable Celliant cover; 100-night trial

The Original Bear mattress is an affordable all-foam bed that’s built to fit all types of sleepers. The bed allows you to sink in slightly with a top layer of memory foam. A second layer of responsive transition foam provides support and cushioning to help keep your spine in alignment while you sleep. A high-density foam base provides support, and since it’s foam there are relatively few pressure points.

Importantly, the Original Bear mattress doesn’t sleep as hot as many other all-foam mattresses. It is outfitted with a Celliant cover, which promotes breathability while also helping your muscles relax overnight. In addition, the memory foam layer is infused with cooling graphite gel to diffuse heat away from your body.

While this bed is designed for all sleepers, it doesn’t suit particularly light or particularly heavy sleepers all that well. Light sleepers found that it felt very stiff, while heavy sleepers were prone to developing pressure points or finding the bed very soft. It’s possible to add a plush mattress cover to this bed, but Bear Mattress also makes a more expensive hybrid offering for heavier sleepers.

The Original Bear mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. Keep in mind that since it’s fully foam, it’s not unexpected for the bed to develop sags and divots once it gets beyond 10 years of age.

    Why are we impressed?
  • Suits back, stomach, and side sleepers
  • Comes with Celliant cover
  • Graphite gel-infused memory foam for cooling
  • Highly responsive transition foam layer
What negatives must you be aware of?
  • Relatively short 10-year warranty
  • Doesn’t work well for light or heavy sleepers

Best for Stomach Sleepers

Allswell Luxe Hybrid

Features
  • Type: hybrid
  • Thickness: 10 inches
  • Firmness: medium-firm
  • Number of layers: 3
  • Cover: 98% polyester, 2% lycra spandex, 1″ cotton padding
  • Warranty:10-year limited

More features: cooling graphite and copper gel layer; edge support on two sides; 100-night sleep trial

The Allswell mattress is an impressively affordable hybrid bed. It’s built around a thick innerspring core that’s made with individually wrapped coils to reduce motion transfer across the mattress. The edges are also reinforced, which is a feature that’s typically restricted to much more expensive beds.

The comfort layer of the Allswell mattress is made from copper and graphite gel-infused memory foam. This still allows you to sink into the bed like traditional memory foam, but it does a much better job of pulling heat away from your body throughout the night.

The bed is finished with a quilted cover, which is comfortable if not overly breathable – it doesn’t contain materials like Celliant or Tencel that you are likely to find in more premium mattresses. Unfortunately, the quilted cover cannot be removed from the bed, so you’ll probably want to add a mattress protector to keep it clean.

One thing to note is that the transition layer between the memory foam and innerspring core is relatively thin. Some sleepers complained about pressure points as a result of this, although stomach sleepers appreciated that the bed feels firm despite having a memory foam comfort layer. While the bed is rated medium-firm, sleepers felt that it runs slightly firm.

Allswell keeps the extras included with this mattress to industry standards, which is nice given the below-average price. You get a 100-night sleep trial with free shipping and free returns, plus a 10-year warranty.

    What are our favorite features?
  • Individually wrapped coils
  • Reinforced edges for extra support
  • Cooling gel-infused memory foam
  • 100-night sleep trial
    What could be better?
  • Feels somewhat firm
  • Thin transition layer can lead to pressure points

Best Soft Mattress

PlushBeds Ocean Mist

Features
  • Type: all-foam
  • Thickness: 9 inches
  • Firmness: medium-soft
  • Number of layers: 2
  • Cover: poly-cotton stretch fabric
  • Warranty: 25-year limited

More features: 8″ sturdy wood orthopedic foundation replaces box spring; adjustable bed compatible; 100-night sleep trial

The Ocean Mist mattress from PlushBeds is a very luxe mattress for well under $1,000. The bed is made with a thick layer of memory foam for comfort, which allows you to sink deeply into this bed when you lie down. Side sleepers in particular loved this foam layer, since it dramatically cuts down on pressure points compared to thinner foam mattresses.

Importantly, the memory foam is gel-infused to help with heat dissipation. However, users noted that since you’re surrounded by foam, this bed can still sleep hot during summer nights.

There isn’t a transitional foam layer in this bed. Instead, the memory foam layer provides cushioning for a six-inch base foam core that offers support and responsiveness as you move. The foam is made with an open-cell construction, which helps increase the bed’s overall breathability.

We appreciated that this bed also comes with an eight-inch wooden foundation, which eliminates the need to purchase a box spring. It is highly supportive and can easily handle the weight of two heavyset sleepers.

PlushBeds offers a whopping 25-year warranty on this mattress, which is almost unheard of for all-foam beds. In addition, you get to try out the mattress for up to 100 nights risk-free.

    What stands out?
  • Thick memory foam layer
  • Gel infusion for extra cooling
  • Base foam is highly breathable
  • Comes with wooden foundation
  • 25-year warranty
What cons did we manage to find?
  • Can sleep warm
  • Feels very soft for heavyset sleepers

  • Number of layers: 2
  • Cover: breathable stretch knit fabric
  • Warranty: 20-year limited

More features: 30-night sleep trial; adjustable base compatible

The Classic mattress from Live and Sleep is a relatively basic yet comfortable two-layer foam mattress. This 10-inch bed is made with a 2.5-inch memory foam comfort layer and a 7.5-inch base foam layer. Users found that you sink into the bed a fair amount, although the support core is reasonably responsive to movement.

Live and Sleep doesn’t infuse the foams in this mattress with gels or use an open-cell design, so the bed can sleep warm. This was one of the biggest complaints that users had about this mattress, and many recommended that it is best for a guest room where it will only see occasional use for this reason. The soft knit cotton cover offers some breathability, but you are still surrounded by foam when sleeping in this bed.

Another thing to keep in mind about this mattress is that Live and Sleep only offers a 30-night sleep trial. This is significantly shorter than what most competitors are offering. In addition, most experts point out that it takes up to 30 nights of sleeping on a new bed for your body to adjust – so you’ll only just be starting to evaluate this mattress when the trial period comes to an end.

Despite the short sleep trial, this mattress is built to last. Live and Sleep offers a generous 20-year warranty, which protects against sags and divots in the memory foam among other defects.

    What are its best features?
  • Very inexpensive
  • Medium-firm feel with memory foam support
  • Responsive base layer
  • Long 20-year warranty
    What could be improved?
  • Surprisingly short sleep trial
  • Can sleep very warm

Things to Consider

After you are finished reading through this buying guide, you will know everything you need to find the perfect mattress for your particular needs.

Tips on how to prolong your mattress’s life

Even though the mattresses we are looking at are budget-friendly, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t last a good long time. Of course, even the best mattresses under $1000 are going to need a little bit of help to prolong their life as long as possible. Thankfully, there are several different steps you can follow to make sure you get your money’s worth out of your mattress.

    • Be sure to use a mattress cover and a mattress pad. Both of these items will help to protect your mattress from normal wear and tear.
    • Clean your sheets at least every two weeks. By keeping your sheets clean, you will be able to cut down on any dust accumulation that can wreck your mattress.
    • Take the time to rotate your mattress every three months or so. If you don’t rotate your mattress, your mattress will be constantly compacted in the same location, which will shorten its lifespan.

Features to consider while choosing a mattress

In this section, we will go through every key component that you need to know to find the perfect mattress for your bedroom.

Type

Best Mattress Under $1000Depending on the type of sleeper you are and how much support you need, make sure you select the right type of mattress. You can choose from either polyurethane foam, memory foam, latex foam, innerspring, or a hybrid mattress. Each of these different types will offer a different level of support and durability.

  • Polyurethane foam – Foam mattresses are made out of synthetic foam that is usually on the softer side. They are usually relatively cheap, though they are not very durable or long-lasting when compared to other types. They also tend to be a bit warm, which makes them great for cold sleepers.
  • Memory Foam – Memory foam is an extra supportive type of foam that can offer a variety of firmness levels based on how many layers there are in the mattress. This type of foam contours to your body’s shape, which makes them exceptionally supportive. They are also usually very long-lasting and durable, though you do need to be sure to rotate them often. A great example of a lightweight yet supportive memory foam bed is the Casper Sleep Memory Foam Mattress.
  • Latex FoamLatex mattresses are some of the most durable mattresses on the market. They are made out of natural materials, which makes them hypoallergenic. While they are not as supportive as memory foam mattresses, they can still provide a good night’s sleep, especially since they are highly breathable. If you’re interested in this type of foam, take a closer look at the Sleep On Latex Pure Green Natural Latex Mattress.
  • Innerspring – Innerspring mattresses are a budget-friendly option. They use an internal spring system to provide the support you need while you sleep. Of course, they also break down the fastest, so keep that in mind before you buy one. One of the most reliable models of this type is the Sealy Response Performance Euro Pillow Top Mattress.
  • Hybrid – Hybrid mattresses are actually a combination of different mattress types to try and provide the best aspects of each without any of the disadvantages. They are usually highly durable and breathable and have an innerspring system covered with latex or memory foam (as seen in the Signature Sleep Mattress Hybrid Cool Gel Mattress).

Thickness

Best Mattress Under $1000The greatest determining factor in a mattress’s level of support and durability is the thickness. If you go for a mattress with a slimmer profile, then you are going to be sacrificing support and durability for the sake of saving money.

By getting a thicker mattress, you will increase the durability and level of support that the mattress can provide you with, though you will spend a bit more money up front.

Firmness

The firmness level that you select is largely dependent on the type of sleeper that you are. For instance, if you are someone who sleeps on their sides, then you will want to go for a softer mattress since it will allow your head, neck, and spine to align properly. If you are a back sleeper, however, then go for a firmer mattress. A firm mattress will keep you from sinking in too much, which could give you a neck ache in the morning.

However, keep in mind that the firmness level is very arguable, so only your personal experience will determine if the mattress is ideal for you. Therefore, look for a model that offers a trial period to test your mattress first.

Number of layers

The number of layers in a mattress is going to determine two different important factors. The first being how durable the mattress is going to be. Usually, the lower the number of layers, the less durable the model is. The inverse is true of a mattress with lots of layers since more layers will make it more durable. The second factor that the number of layers will affect is how firm you can expect your mattress to be. If you get one with lots of layers, it will probably be relatively soft, while fewer layers will equal a firmer mattress. For example, the DynastyMattress Grand AtlantisBreeze Memory Foam Mattress boasts six layers which makes it both durable and plush.

Cover features

The cover that comes with your mattress is designed to help protect it from any damage that might occur during its everyday use. There are a couple of important features to keep in mind when it comes to the cover. First off, you should be sure to get a mattress with a cover that can be removed and machine-washed. If the cover is non-removable, make sure that the material is easy to spot wash at least. This will help to make your life a lot simpler. Secondly, the material for your cover should be breathable, and comfortable to help you sleep better and cooler.

Your sleeping position

Best Mattress Under $1000There are three different sleeping positions out there, and each type of sleeper needs a different firmness level. You probably fall into one of the following categories: back, side, or stomach.

  • Back – This is by far the most common sleeping position and requires a firm mattress.
  • Side – Side sleepers are the next most common sleeping position, and will usually need a softer mattress.
  • Stomach – Stomach sleepers are the least common sleeper type. If you sleep on your stomach, then you will probably need a super plush mattress.

Certification

Mattress certifications help to guarantee a variety of different important factors that show you that a mattress is of the highest quality. They let you know that a mattress is free of chemicals, hypoallergenic, and is safe to sleep on.

Warranty

Your mattress is going to get used a lot. The odds are that, even if you take exceptional care of it, it is going to break down over time. By getting a warranty, you can help to guarantee your investment. Some mattress companies also offer a trial period to see if you like the mattress before. This system requires no risk on your part since you can easily return the mattress if it doesn’t work for you. The Layla Sleep Memory Foam Queen Mattress, for instance, offers lifetime warranty together with a 120-night trial period.

Extra features

Most of the extra features that come with a mattress have to do with the cover you select. You will want to look for one that is easy to remove, wash, and reinstall on your mattress. You can also get mattresses that are hypoallergenic and have a built-in charcoal layer to eliminate any and all odors that might otherwise soak into your mattress.

FAQ

What are the advantages of hybrid mattresses over other types, if any?

The biggest advantages that hybrid mattresses can offer you is that they are exceptionally durable and supportive. Since they have two different support systems working together, they are very supportive in comparison to other mattress types.

Is each mattress model flippable?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to flip every mattress on the market. Speaking of our list, while they all can be rotated, you can only flip the Layla Sleep Memory Foam Queen Mattress.

What mattress type to choose for minimal motion transfer?

If you are trying to make sure that you don’t disturb your partner, then memory foam is going to be your best bet. Since it contours to your body, it will stay slightly compressed when you get up, which helps to limit motion transfer.

What is a pillow top/euro pillow top?

A pillow top mattress has an extra external soft layer on the top of the mattress that can help to make a firm mattress feel a bit softer, while still providing the level of support you need during the night.

Does each mattress require a special base? Can I simply put it on the floor?

Most mattresses requires some sort of support system when they are put on a bed, though some, like the Layla Sleep Memory Foam Queen Mattress, can be used with any foundation. All of the mattresses can be placed on the floor, though this could cut down on how long they last.
